LYME GETS UNDER YOUR SKIN, OURS TOO!

Do you ever feel like you have bugs crawling in your skin? Well, if you have Lyme disease, you’re absolutely right!

For years, we at Lyme Laser Centers have heard from countless people that the sensation of bugs, worms, and/or tingling throughout the person’s skin has been a perpetuating reminder of the more severe underlying health concerns that they combat every single day.

If you’ve stopped trying to explain these sensations with others because of their common dismissal as nothing more than a “phantom tingling”, you’re now in luck [kind of]. There may be a more scientific ‘truth’ to those claims. As far back as we can remember, there has been a correlation between these sensations (which can often be debilitating) and Lyme disease, but identifying any reasonable scientific explanation was beyond our grasp.

This sensation is referred to as formication, where no identifiable physical stimulation is present but the feeling occurs nonetheless. Among the list of commonly associated illnesses, Lyme disease is among those at the top of the list. (1)

So, could there be a more scientifically driven causation to the crawling skin? In 2011, a study was published, bringing the discussion of Borrelia burgdorferi present in the skin to the forefront of this discussion. It has been known for many years before this publication that B. burgdorferi was present within all bodily tissue, however, this study sought to specifically identify the biodiversity of the bacteria within skin, blood, synovial fluid, and cerebrospinal fluid. The findings showed that “strains from skin are significantly more diverse than strains at any of the disseminated sites.”

What this study, and many since have shown, is that the various different forms of human tissue act as a ‘niche’ for different subsets of the total pathogen population, as noted in the study.

The increased presence of biodiversity of B. burgdorferi combined with the sensory aspect of the skin may be a significant factor in identifying the reason for these ‘phantom sensations’. (2)

Will it ever go away? In a word, yes!

When a person engages in the Lyme Laser Protocol™, we often receive a lengthy list of symptoms, concerns, and questions. Of those, formication is often one of them and the question is always the same…will it go away? As a part of the process, we often see a significant reduction and complete elimination of them as they complete the protocol.

Although it may not seem as debilitating a symptom when compared to the brain fog, anxiety, chronic fatigue, chronic pain, etc. that many endure, it is truly challenging to comprehend the discomfort and torment that is caused by such a commonly dismissed symptom unless you’ve experienced it firsthand.

If you’re ever feeling overwhelmed or without support, just remember; you’re not alone.
