LYME’S DEADLY DIET

When Carbohydrates Kill

Yes, the title is correct. There are some large claims in the Lyme community that removing carbohydrates and sugars is the key to successfully eliminating B. burgdorferi and other bacteria related to Lyme disease. Unfortunately, those recommendations are only half-truths and may be causing more harm than good!

Carbohydrates and sugars are fundamental sources of energy for nearly all living things and B. burgdorferi is no exception. More specifically, sources such as glucose, maltose, and glycerol are all recognized sources of growth (energy) for B. burgdorferi. (1) So it makes sense to remove these from your diet to ‘starve’ the bacteria, right? Not necessarily.

In fact, over the years, we have recognized a strong correlation between those who have engaged in “lyme diets” and those with the highest level of neurological degradation and loss of function. Simply put, by eliminating (or greatly reducing) your intake of carbohydrates, you’re reducing a crucial resource in the body’s regenerative cycle, compromising your ability to combat the effects and strengthen the systems that are intended to help in the fight against Lyme.

Then why do we do it?! The principle idea behind this diet is to eliminate the food source for the bacterium, forcing it into a position of starvation and eventually, death. Sounds great! Until you realize that these very sources of food are stored within the human body as a resource to produce energy. (2) This wouldn’t be such a bad idea if the Lyme bacteria did not possess a flagella (Read: Lyme Spirochete: Diving Deeper than any other Bacteria), enabling it to penetrate into the deepest layers of tissue through the human body, where the energy storage exist.

As the bacteria feeds on these energy sources, they deplete, leaving your body without the resources to rebuild that tissue. Without the ability to replace those storage resources, you will find yourself suffering from the devastating effects of Lyme disease at a rate much faster than of those who enjoyed their share of fruits and carbs.

When is the right time to reduce carbs? Only when in the process of engaging a recognized solution to deteriorating the protective mechanism known as a biofilm (read more on biofilms here: The Slimy Secret to Lyme Disease) and when supporting the body’s regenerative systems, does it make sense to reduce carbohydrates and sugars entering the body. But don’t believe everything you’re told, antibiotics have been proven time and time again to be ineffective in deteriorating this biofilm, and due to wonderful defense system in the human body referred to as the Blood-Brain Barrier, your stevia extract or other “proven killers” won’t exactly do the job either, without the added help of some pretty amazing technological advancements.
